"As the very proud Patron of the Shackleton Epic Expedition I am sending my warmest good wishes to Tim Jarvis & his five companions as they depart. The Expedition will be incredibly demanding both at sea & on land ,but I have every confidence that the men will remember my grandfather's words :'Difficulties are just things to overcome'. There will be a triumphant conclusion, and a wonderful tribute to Ernest Shackleton & his companions of 1916." The Hon.Alexandra Shackleton, Patron. |
|
"I woud like to pass my very best wishes to the expedition for a safe and successful outcome. The efforts of Tim Jarvis and the expedition members serves to remind us of the tremendous courage and tenacity that Shackleton and his men needed just in order to survive agtainst all odds, in incredibly difficult Antarctic circumstances.
It was a miracle that Shackleton and his men managed to reach South Georgia, given the difficulties in using such basic navigational aides in some of the roughest seas on earth. Of course, having landed, the challenge continued as their trek across dangerous and difficult mountains with little equipment would have defeated lesser men. So I would especially like to send my best wishes for success to Tim Jarvis and the team for what is such a very considerable physical and technical challenge."
The Rt Hon. David Cameron MP Prime Minister of the United Kingdom |
|
“On behalf of our nation – and in the warm spirit of Anglo-Australian friendship – I wish you well in the challenging days ahead….I trust you will re-capture some of Shackleton’s ethos as well, and thus return uplifted in spirit and full of renewed admiration for this remarkable man and what he was able to achieve in the name of science and humanity.” Read the full message here Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard. |
|
“In 2013, your journey will honour the legacy of Shackleton and his men – heroes all….Tim, Nick, Paul, Barry, Sebastian and Edward, on behalf of all Australians I wish you fair winds for your 800 nautical mile journey aboard Alexandra Shackleton.” Read the full message here The Governor General, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce |
|
"On behalf of the people of New South Wales, I wish the Shackleton Epic Expedition fair winds in your extraordinary endeavour to recreate Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary voyage of survival.
As the official event of the forthcoming Shackleton Centenary, I know that your skills will safeguard your replica boat, Alexandra Shackleton, and honour the legacy of Ernest Shackleton while raising awareness of climate change impacts in Antarctica.
As Patron of the Shackleton Epic Leadership Round Table, I am familiar with Sir Ernest Shackleton’s extraordinary leadership abilities and I am confident that you are all able to embody these exemplary qualities during your courageous voyage.
Our best wishes are with you all for an exhilarating experience and a safe return."
Professor Marie R Bashir AC CVO
Governor of New South Wales

We will be keeping up to date with your progress from our HQ in Glasgow and will look forward to toasting your success with a glass of Mackinlay’s whisky. Dear Tim, Seb and All onboard the Alexandra Shackleton, It is great that you are underway, sailing and making such good progress despite the bad weather. You are an amazingly courageous and brave team to take this chalenge on. I would much prefer my life in submarines to bouncing around on the Southern Oceans! All the very best wishes from all in The James Caird Society and we hope you complete the journey safely. Best wishes Sir James Perowne Admiral Chairman The James Caird Society |
|
Tim & Team congratulations on arrival and by now perhaps slogging over glaciers. Epic effort and totally confirms that you are all six barking mad. Feet thing sounds great – just the sort of thing you want in a confined space – boy changing room on steroids. Wish you all well and continuing success – take care of the boat and yourselves. Last Saturday I sat next to a somewhat tired and weathered young man on a flight from Punta Arenas to Santiago. I didn't hear the announcement that the Shackleton Epic crew were on board and so it was only after the flight that I realised I had been sitting next to Barry Gray. I blush to think that I told him that opening a packet of nuts was a challenge. I was returning from a trip down to Cape Horn on the Stella Australis where I saw a documentary about the original Shackleton expedition. I was completely in awe of this and equally impressed by the Shackleton Epic. What an incredible achievement. Congratulations to all. Very best wishes Jo Brasier |
|
Baz, I always knew you were completely mad but this is truly awesome – a fantastic achievement mate - well done to you all and look forward to hearing the story over a beer in Plymouth when you get back. Many, many congratulations Dave Cosford |

Well dome Tim and crew , pretty amazing , pretty scary and pretty proud to have met you Neil Shah |

I am a distant relative of Harry McNish. He was my paternal grandmother's great-uncle. She was born and raised in Scotland and came to the U.S. in her late teens. She told me that she remembers seeing him when she was a young child. I vaguely recount being told about the Endurance and Harry McNish when I was a boy. I didn't realize the significance of the story until I was handed a book about Shackleton's leadership when I was a midshipman at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Interestingly, I was already on my way to becoming a merchant mariner when I rediscovered an important maritime connection in my family history. Despite being denied the Polar Expedition Medal, I'm proud that Harry modified the James Caird to help make her fit for the voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia. This is my father's favorite part of the Endurance story, because he too is a carpenter. I almost wish that I had been part of this 21st century expedition to better understand the conditions that they experienced almost a century ago. Regards, Andrew Kelvas

Big respect for your voyage to South Georgia – the worst should be over …. Enjoy the crossing its spectacular !! hope the snow is firm and you avoid all the crevasses… God speed Best wishes,

|
Glad to hear you have completed the boat journey. You were lucky with the weather. If you are at Peggotty Bluff you should find a plaque in a cave erected by the South Aris expedition of 1997 when a group of Irish Adventurers tried the crossing in a boat they called the Tom Crean. They had to abandon the boat due to very bad weather but they crossed South Georgia in some 56 hours. Good luck on the crossing of South Georgia. I have been lucky enough to visit twice as a tourist. John Shackleton (Irish cousin of EHS) |
|
G'Day to all of you, Eagerly following this remarkable challenge you all have entered into, being an Australian and it being our national day I will be not only having a beer and saluting what a wonderful country we live in with a young and proud history, I will be cracking my recreated MacKinlay's old scotch whiskey from the "Nimrod"Antarctic expedition in 1907 as a toast to all involved in this expedition and the enduring heart and character of both the Shackleton and his team back in 1907 and Tim with his team out there creating their own piece of history. Gook luck and cheers to all. Paul Elsmore |
|

Congratulations on the the first goal in the Caird. I have been watching wint great interest encouraged by the Book Endurance. Again congratulations and good luck with the enterior of SG. I wish you safe passage. Steve |
|
To Tim and the crew! Big Congratulations on making the landfall on South Georgia. It looks like you didn't have to spend a stormy night beating into the wind to avoid being wrecked! I hope that you had at least one night of star-gazing in the empty ocean. I hope you also saw that wonderful sight of albatrosses gliding along the wave crests as they passed by. If you read this before embarking on the 2nd leg crossing the mountains, can I suggest two things? One: Keep an eye out for the famous stove which, having laid buried in snow since 1916, may now be exposed in a crevasse in these warmer times. Two: Do what nobody remembered to do in Stromness outside the manager's house: be photographed together before any washing and shaving!!! In any case: Good luck! David McLean (walked only some of EHS's mountain route in 2009) |
|
Great news you all landed with humour intact! All the best to Tim, Barry and Ed on the push across the mountains. Ed Andrew and Jane Edwards |
|
To the Alexandra Shackleton crew: Best wishes for a safe landfall today. Your spirit for adventure is well matched by your courage. Now posting a screen shot of the Yellowbrick tracker map to Facebook – and the enormity of the task is obvious.

We, Anne and Michael W-W and the late Hakon Mielche, had the great pleasure of being on 'The Explorer' for her maiden voyage to the Antarctic, with Keith Shackleton, and many others of The Explorers' Club, in January 1970! We were in Paradise Bay for Anne's birthday on Feb. 6th, in fact, and she was given a rousing party and gifts * that night! What wonderful and, then, quite unique memories.! Few more than 250 women had ever been there! Bon Voyage to those braving the elements there today! Michael. * One was a lovely 8" x 10", b and w drawing from Keith! |

Bon voyage to you all, only just found out about this via Stephen Fry's tweet. I have read all about Shackleton, including his own account and I am a huge admirer. I was so excited to read about this. I wish I was with you! Although that's not to say I don't appreciate how incredibly tough and physically & mentally challenging this is going to be. But what an incredible experience and what breathtaking terrain you will be covering. I will be checking back every day. Stay safe and well and lots of good luck to you all. “I have no doubt that Providence guided us, not only across those snow fields, but across the storm-white sea… I know that during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia it seemed to me often that we were four, not three. I said nothing to my companions on the point, but afterwards Worsley said to me, ‘Boss, I had a curious feeling on the march that there was another person with us.’

To all Shackleton Epic Expedition members, Having just sailed the Southern Ocean in the opposite direction from South Georgia to Elephant Island in a considerably larger vessel, a Russian Oceanographic Research Ship, I have some idea of just how arduous, demanding and difficult this journey will be. The journey replicating one of the greatest maritime feats of all time is audacious, bold and brave. God speed the “Alexandra Shackleton” and keep safe all those who sail in her. Rick Dobbie |

Good luck Nick and the whole team – fair winds and safe passage. As you know, gentlemen never sail to windward, so beam reaches will be fine! Hope all the rowing practice on “Quickstep” is not needed too often. Geoff and Sue Sinton |

Shackleton has always been one of my heros, and the voyage of the James Caird ranks in my opinion in addition to the voyage of Bligh as the two greatest boat journeys of recorded time. The Feat of Shackleton in bringing all his crew home safely after such an epic expedition is unequalled. I wish you well in your voyage and then in the crossing of South Georgia, although I don't suppose 'Health and Safety' will allow you to replicate the toboggan slide down the mountain! David Cornes |
|
I shall follow this epic voyage with great interest. With the best of luck to all of you. Edith Smith |

Good journey lads! Fair winds and following seas. Best Wishes and safe return. Thom C |

One only has to read "Endurance" cover to cover, to grasp the magnitude of this endeavor. So stay strong, ' keep your head when all about you are losing theirs' and remember ' He who walks with the crowd, stays with the crowd. He who walks alone goes to places no one has ever been' ! But you are not alone for the world is following your odyssey and urging you to succeed. Like Shackleton, may you triumph ! Eric Wilson |

Wishing you all a safe and successful journey as you venture to retrace that famous boat journey and mountain crossing of South Georgia. I hope you take lots of great photos as back in April 1916 not having Frank Hurley on the voyage meant we missed out on his images of the wild southern ocean and ice capped peaks of South Georgia. Safe sailing. I will be following your progress with great interest. Best wishes from all your Irish fans

I have no doubt that you are well prepared and experienced so I will simply wish you the best of luck for you will surely need it!" Reg Marron Kettering D'entrecasteaux Channel Southern Tasmania |

"The story of Shackleton’s incredible journey and the tenacity and endurance of the men left behind on Elephant Island has inspired me since I heard it many years ago. It is a story that shows the incredible reserves and strength of humans; it is a story packed full of success against huge odds and it is a story that puts into perspective the minor inconveniences of modern life. Recreating it will be a huge challenge and one that will provide us with many new inspiring moments, I’m sure. I wish you the greatest success, good luck and the deep-rooted determination that ensured Shackleton’s success." Mel Lane Teacher, Dorchester, Dorset |
